Watcha Clan gehören zu den vielversprechendsten Fusion Bands der Jetzt-Zeit. Auf der Bühne entfacht Watcha Clan sind ein musikalischer Flirt, nein, eine amour fou zwischen Londoner Dancefloor und provencialischen Traditionen, zwischen den Bergen des Balkans und den alten Stämmen des Mittelmeers, Europa und Nordafrika, Tradition und Moderne. Matt La Basse wirbelt über die Bühne wieder Clan mit Gitarre, Kontrabass, Harmonium, Keyboards, Mac, Sequencern, Schlagzeugresten, Querflöte und Gesang ein Live-Gewitter aus Drum’n’Bass, Jungle, arabischen Melodien, Hip Hop, Dub und Reggae/Ragga, das seinesgleichen sucht. Und das mit nur noch 3-4 Musikern! aufgezogen, Supreme Clem bearbeitet seine Tasten und Regler, als hätte er mindestens 8 Hände und Sister Ka leitet mit ihrer glasklaren, prägnanten Stimme durch treibende Beats und arabische Harmonien, um Sekunden später mit der Gitarre in der Hand einen zuckersüßen Reggae zu singen. Nachdem ihr erstes selbstproduziertes Album (Nomades A.K.A, 2002) sich 20.000 mal verkaufte, nahmen sich Watcha Clan ausgiebig Zeit und veröffentlichten 2005 ihr vielbeachtetes Album „Le Bastion“ (Vai La Bott, 2005). Die Dinge entwickelten sich gut für den Clan, die Kritiken für das Album waren durchweg positiv, die Band tourte international mit großem Erfolg. Aber da brodelte noch etwas in den Musikern, da gab es noch so viel mehr zu entdecken und herauszulassen. Und so verließ der Clan den sanft bereiteten Weg der gutgelaunten Weltmusik, und begann, sich der Leidenschaft für elektronische Musik hinzugeben. 2006 päsentierten Watcha Clan dann ihr neues Projekt „Diaspora Hi-Fi“, in dem sie das scheinbar unvereinbare vereinen: fetten elektronischen Clubsound mit traditioneller Weltmusik aus den verschiedensten Regionen der Welt. Erst kürzlich jammten sie in Algerien mit mehreren traditionellen algerischen Künstlern mehrere Tage lang gemeinsam, um dann das erarbeitete in verschiedenen Städten vor einem enthusiastischen Publikum zu präsentieren. Ein ähnliches Projekt gab es kurz darauf in Barcelona mit spanischen und internationalen Musikern. Mit ihrem neuen Sound sind Watcha Clan bei sich selbst angekommen, das hört und spürt man. Und alle anderen sind herzlich eingeladen, mit ihnen sämtliche musikalischen Grenzgebiete zu erforschen, um die Grenzen dann zu sprengen! ENGLISH: Watcha Clan are among the most fascinating and auspicious Fusion/Crossover bands at the moment. On stage, instrumented with guitars, an upright bass, harmonium, mac, keyboards, sampler, transverse flute and voice, they create a spectacle between Drum’n’Bass, Jungle, Oriental, Hip Hop, Dub and Reggae/Ragga beyond comparison. And all this with only 3-4 musicians! Watcha Clan are a musical flirt, no, an „amour fou“ that takes you on a journey from the London Dancefloors to Mediterranean shores, from the balkan mountains to traditionals from southern france, from Europe to North Africa, from roots to revolution. They rock and sample, Matt La Basse spins all over the stage as if he was winded up, Supreme Clem works on his keys and and controllers as if he had 8 hands and Sista Ka’s incredibly clear and concise voice leads the audience through vibrant beats and arabian harmonies, only to grab the guitar a second later and sing a sweet-as-can-be Reggae tune. After having sold 20.000 copies of their first selfmade album (Nomades A.K.A, 2002), Watcha Clan took some studio time and in 2005 released their album “Le Bastion” (VaW La Bott, 2005), for which they gained enthusiastic critics all over. Things were going well for the Clan, they toured internationally and their albums were highly rated both by audience and critics. But there was that restlessness inside the musicians, knowing that there was so much more to explore in World Music and that there would have to be a way of letting out all that energy they felt inside. And so the Clan left the cosy path of playing festive World Music and gave in to their passion for electronic music. In 2006, Watcha Clan 2006 presented their new project „Diaspora Hi-Fi“, with which they succeeded to combine the incompatible: phat electronic club beats with deeply traditional sounds from all over the world. It worked out, and they started working with international artists from all over, as e.g. just shortly in Algeria and in Spain, jamming together for a few days and presenting their results on stages throughout the country afterwards. With their new sound , Watcha Clan found themselves, they are right where they want to be, this is easy to hear and to feel. And everybody else is invited to celebrate with them, explore all musical borderlines and – of course – cross them! |
